What can we learn from a grain of sand?
Sand may seem like a mundane topic at first, but it really is so much more than initially meets the eye! Every beach tells the complex tale of its geological history, each grain a chapter waiting to be read. Here is an up-close look at why sand is so fascinating, and how it can tell a story.
Looking at tiny wonders like sand can help us to better understand all sorts of things like how certain organisms are formed and what sort of rocks make up a specific land mass. Sand is a time capsule looking back hundreds— even thousands of years, when you hold a grain of sand you are holding a remnant of the past.
There is no end to the number of small wonders that this world has to offer, sand is just one of them.
DEEP LOOK is a science video series that explores big science by going very, very small, from KQED and PBS Digital Studios.
Using macro photography and microscopy they are looking at the world up close.
